3 Ways I Will Keep The Weight Off

Like many of you, I have struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. At one point in 1996, I thought about losing some weight and decided to go for a run around the block. Halfway down the street, I pinched a nerve in my back. Six months later and countless trips to the chiropractor and I was ready to try again.

As more people found out about my story, many were eager to help with suggestions. I tried at least 5 MLM companies that all promised to make me skinny and rich. My negative results to their genius schemes fell into the non-typical category.

One year into my search I found a regimen that worked for me. I went to a nutritionist that taught me how to eat foods that would help my body to work in the way it was designed. As long as I ate the right food, I would be able to maintain a good weight. It sounds all too easy, doesn't it? Did I mention that the nutritionist had every meal written down for me? It all looks so good on paper. I followed the program for 3 years with wonderful results.

So what happened? It's now 2017, 20 years later and in January I was right back to where I started. It's easy to explain but hard to understand. I knew what to do but I just would not or could not make those right choices every day.

If you are reading this, you are probably like me and already know what you should be eating so I'm not going to go there. You have probably tried a number of quick fixes like the grapefruit diet or the cabbage diet or shakes, pills and maybe even an ear staple. Believe you me, I have tried them all.

Here are a few more things you may not have tried that I did. Spray vitamins, green algae with alkaline water, super fiber cookies, prescription appetite control pills, and every form of fat absorbing pill at the health food store. I must say some of those things did work for a while but nothing ever lasted.

After much prayer and introspection, I think I have finally found the answer. I have dropped 30 pounds in 6 months without any gimmicks. I feel good and I'm enjoying this life with a bright future ahead of me. Here are three reasons why I will be able to maintain a healthy weight for the rest of my days on this planet.

1.) No More Finish Lines I have always been pretty good at reaching goals. When I was a kid my Dad took me to work with him during the summer and he would pay me $1.00 per day. He said that if I could save up $100.00 that he would buy me a motorcycle. It took a while but I finally saved up the money and my dad was a bit surprised. He was a man of his word and I got that motorcycle.

During my first successful round with the nutritionist, I wanted to reach my goal weight and run an Ironman distance triathlon. In 1999 I reached my goal weight and completed the Florida Ironman that same year.

Here is the problem, my goals were too short and mostly self-serving. In January of 2017, God was able to help me get a glimpse into the way He sees things in this situation.

He was able to help me realize that He wants me to be healthy not only for my sake but for the sake of others. He was able to show me that I have not been able to do this on my own power and that I should depend more on His grace and mercy.

My new goal is to trust Him more each and every day to help me make healthy choices and there is no finish line. This is an ongoing thing for as long as I live. No more finish lines. When I mess up, I trust Him more.

When I go to my sister in law's house and she has a delicious baked spaghetti followed with chocolate chip cookies, it's OK. I don't have seconds anymore, but I still enjoy time with family. I don't worry about it. Tomorrow will take care of itself and I will press on toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. This reminds me of Philippians 3:13-15New International Version (NIV)13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

2.) Missed Motivations The second reason I was not able to keep the weight off was due to missed motivations. Superficial motivations based on external influences did not work. When my doctor said that I needed to lose weight, I did not really care. When the mirror said I needed to lose weight, It was not really a bother. That's just me. You are different I'm sure.

God is giving me a greater revelation of His Love and grace. I have begun to understand that God likes me and made me different on purpose. He put different desires in my heart and He wants to give me those desires. I am learning more and more about the awesome Love of God and it is delightful. Ir reminds me of Psalm 37:4New International Version (NIV)4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

God has created within each one of us unique and specific desires. You have seen the picture of the horse with a carrot being dangled in front, hanging from a stick. That horse will stretch and move until it gets it's prize. If you were going to motivate a Lion you could use a big steak, for a Seal you could use a fish.

When reaching my previously stated short term goals I used my built in desires. My desire for a motorcycle helped me to get up at 5:00 a.m. every day during the summer to work all day for $1.00 on 100 consecutive days. That desire kept me from buying toys and dropping quarters on 80's video games. Those were pretty big feats for a middle schooler.

When training for the 1999 Ironman I wanted to raise money to help support a Sidewalk Sunday School program. I used my desire to help others for motivation to swim 2.6 miles in the ocean, ride my bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles. It is apparent that this desire to help others is a big motivation for me.

While I like to swim, bike and run, I don't like it enough to do it over 30 hours per week for 36 weeks. The only reason I was able to pull off a stunt like that was that of my God-given desire to help others, especially kids.

Like I said before, we all have different desires. Don't judge me and I won't judge you. Let God be the judge. I am now using my desire for a motorcycle to help me along my new journey. I have promised my wife that I will not ride my new bike if I weigh over a certain weight. This is just one more way to make sure I stay on track. Accountability counts for something. I am naming my new motorcycle "Visitation Again", that way when people ask where is Wayne, Debra can say, "He is out on Visitation Again."

3.) Morphed Mindset The third reason I was not able to maintain a healthy weight was my morphed mindset. I would always think of myself as being a fat person. I have a vivid memory of something that happened when I was at one of my skinny points in life. Someone made the comment to me, "You are so skinny." My reply was, "I may be skinny now but I'm still fat on the inside."

God has been able to help me see myself the way He sees me. I am His child and He loves me no matter what I look like on the outside. He looks at my heart, what's on the inside. So now I don't want to see myself as a skinny person or a fat person but I want to see myself as a blessed person. I am blessed to be a blessing. I want to be the most healthy that I can be in order to enjoy the life that God has given me.

I want to continually renew my mind and think to myself what does God's word say about this or that situation. This reminds me of Romans 12:2New International Version (NIV)2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

I hope this post has helped you in some way. I pray that God will give you a greater revelation of His love for you. God made you special and unique and He longs to give you the desires of your heart. It's easy to take delight in God when you realize that He wants the best for you. Just agree with Him and let his grace and mercy do a work in your life today.
